Employers are facing an unprecedented level of rapid developments in the law governing the workplace. Keeping current on court decisions, executive orders, economic pressures, and new and pending legislation is a challenging and time-consuming process. This seminar will provide you an opportunity to learn about the latest developments in a timely and efficient manner.  Here's a look at the agenda for the morning:
·          Significant recent legislation, including amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the New Jersey Paid Family Leave law
·          A rundown of recent employment-related decisions by the US Supreme Court and New Jersey federal and state courts
·          Employment leave issues under the Family and Medical Leave Act, the New Jersey Family Leave Act, the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act
·          Avoiding liability when conducting reductions in force
·          Legislation on the horizon, including the latest updates on the Employee Free Choice Act and health care reform
 
About the Speakers
Michael J. Canavan is an Associate with Pepper Hamilton LLP and is a member of the firm's Labor and Employment Practice Group. He is the Chair of the HRMA Legislative Affairs Committee. Mr. Canavan counsels and defends employers regarding a broad spectrum of employment issues. He has experience litigating employment issues in federal and state courts, before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights, and in arbitration and mediation settings. Mr. Canavan regularly conducts workplace training in the areas of harassment avoidance, whistleblower compliance and wage and hour compliance. He also regularly speaks and writes on employment law issues. Mr. Canavan received his J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law and his B.A. from Rutgers University. He is admitted to practice in New Jersey and Maine courts.
 
Steven M. Berlin is a Partner in Martin Clearwater & Bell LLP and is the head of that firm's Employment & Labor Practice Group. He is an experienced litigator with over 20 years experience in the employment and labor arena. Mr. Berlin represents companies and executives in a wide range of issues that arise out of the employer-employee relationship from hiring to termination; provides counseling and advice, prepares contracts and policies, and aggressively litigates claims when they arise in federal and state courts, administrative agencies, and arbitration. Mr. Berlin is a five time New Jersey Superior Lawyer. He is a speaker and lecturer at labor and employment law related seminars and he has written for several publications, including being a contributing author for the new Matthew Bender Employment Litigation in New Jersey treatise. He is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell. Mr. Berlin received his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School and his B.S. from the University of Maryland's College of Journalism. He is admitted to practice before both New York and New Jersey Courts.
